SantaCon 2023 Raises $45,000 for Cancer Research

This past weekend hundreds of Santas descended on downtown Cincinnati in a 16-year-old tradition known as SantaCon.

If this is your first time hearing of it (where have you been until now) SantaCon is an annual gathering of Santas or other Christmas-related characters.

It is closely linked with drinking enough alcohol to ensure that the next time participants visit their doctor’s office they will 100% have to lie on their “how much do you drink” questionnaire.

But it’s not all debauchery. Every year the CincySantaCon raises money for cancer research in collaboration with The Cure Starts Now and this year they raised over $45K!

You may also be surprised to hear that SantaCon has a much more storied past…

The first-ever SantaCon took place in 1994 in San Francisco and was inspired by a Danish activist theatre group called Solvognen, which in 1974 gathered dozens of "Santas" in Copenhagen to hand out items from the shelves of a department store to customers as "presents" before they were arrested.

After San Francisco, SantaCons popped up in Portland (1996), Seattle (1997), and Los Angeles and New York (1998). It has since spread to over 44 countries with varying versions and interpretations.

The largest SantaCon in the world however remains, unsurprisingly, in New York City, where this year over 30,000 people donned some version of the red suit.

Ohio Man Takes Bone(less) Wings Case to Ohio Supreme Court

In a lengthy and intriguing legal battle, Michael Berkheimer is taking his case to the Ohio Supreme Court after experiencing severe injuries due to a chicken bone found in his order of boneless wings at a Hamilton restaurant.

Berkheimer firmly believes that the restaurant, along with the food processor and the farm that supplied the chicken, should be held responsible for not ensuring that their advertised "boneless" chicken was indeed devoid of bones.

This case has been in the courts for nearly seven years, and the lower courts ruled in favor of the companies, stating that bone fragments naturally occur in chicken meat dishes.

Berkheimer's attorney contends that companies must stand by the expectations set by their marketing efforts, much like labels such as "dairy-free" or "gluten-free" in the food industry.

On the other hand, the defense argued that the term "boneless" merely refers to the type of meat cut and that requiring every instance of bone fragments in food to go to trial would have detrimental consequences for the industry.

They suggested that restaurants might simply remove the word "boneless" from their menus to protect themselves from liability.

Should the Ohio Supreme Court side with Berkheimer, the case's next phase will involve a Butler County jury determining whether he should have reasonably expected bone fragments in his boneless wing order.
